Ralph Vaughan Williams was a major figure in English music. He lived in 13 Cheyne Walk from 1905 to 1929. Too old to fight, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) serving in France and Flanders, and later on the Salonika front. Towards the end of the war he was a gunner with the Royal Artillery on the Somme.
