George Butterworth

George Butterworth lived at 19 Cheyne Gardens from 1910 until he enlisted at the outbreak of war in 1914. Butterworth was a composer and collector of folk songs and he and Vaughan Williams were great friends. Butterworth eventually became a Second Lieutenant in the 13th Durham Light Infantry. He was killed leading his men at the Battle of the Somme on 5 August 1916. He received a posthumous Military Cross for this action adding to another which he had already received.
